Find out more about the MG MG 5

Is the MG MG 5 a good car?

It’s been a long time since you could describe an MG as having electric performance, but the new MG5 is set to change that, because it’s an EV.

The MG5 is powered by a 156hp electric motor driving the front wheels, and can cover the 0-60mph sprint in just over eight seconds. It also has a combined range figure of 214 miles.

The battery can be charged from 0-80% in 50 minutes using a CCS connection, while a full charge at home using Type 2 fast charging takes around eight and a half hours.

MG has chosen to give its new EV an estate bodystyle, going against the current SUV trend. The brand says it offers superior aerodynamics and better handling, which is ideal for high-mileage fleet drivers and those who value maximum driving efficiency, internal space and driving dynamics. The MG5 sits much lower than most, with the water-cooled battery pack integrated into the car’s chassis, giving it an extremely low centre of gravity

MG is bucking the SUV trend with this EV estate, which is certainly a practical choice.

The boot offers 464 litres of space up to the load cover when the rear seats are raised. Remove the load cover and this expands to 578 litres. Lower the rear seat backs and the load capacity increases to 1,456 litres.

Standard kit on the MG5 is pretty comprehensive. As well as an eight-inch colour touchscreen (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), it gets a six-speaker 3D audio system, a DAB radio, four USB ports, electric windows all-round, air conditioning, regenerative braking, cruise control with speed limiter, an auto-hold electric parking brake and automatic wipers.

In addition, it features active and passive safety systems including front, side and curtain airbags, electronic brake assist, ABS with EBD, twin ISOFIX points in the rear, a tyre pressure monitoring system and Hill Start Assist.

Prices start from just £24,495 after the Plug-In Car Grant (currently £3,000) and users will benefit from 0% Benefit-in-Kind tax during the 2020-21 tax year, or 1% in 2021-22.

The car also has a seven-year warranty, which can be transferred to subsequent owners.

Five colours are available – black, blue, red, silver and white.

We have yet to drive the MG5 but will do so shortly, and we’ll let you know what it’s like as soon as we do.
