These are the first official photos of the all-new electric BMW i7 – an all-electric luxury car that’ll be revealed soon and go on sale later this year as an alternative to the Mercedes EQS and Tesla Model S.

This all-new car will share parts with the upcoming BMW 7 Series but will come with a new electric motor and battery setup giving it between 360 and 380 miles of range.

New BMW i7 EV design

The new BMW i7 will look nothing like any BMW on sale, as shown by this official teaser image, above.

Sure, there’s still a pair of huge kidney grilles but they now have a bright illuminated frame to make sure you won’t miss them.

The headlights are now split into two, with the daytime running lights above and the main beams hidden below within a dark plastic frame.

The rest of the BMW i7’s front bumper appears fairly conventional with two thin vertical intakes at each edge and a low-slung opening beneath the central grilles. The exclusive carwow image below gives you an idea of what these features will look on the finished car.

Although shown in this rendered image, it’s not known whether the i7 will adopt similar blue trim pieces as the BMW i4.

New BMW i7 interior and infotainment

If you thought the new BMW i7’s exterior looked bold, wait until you see the inside. BMW hasn’t revealed the cabin in full yet but has shown a colossal back-seat cinema screen system that’ll likely be offered on extended long-wheelbase versions.

You just have to press a button and this massive 31-inch 8K display folds down from the headlining. The rear sunblinds also extend and the ambient lighting dims to make the back of the car feel like your own personal mobile cinema.

BMW is expected to fit the new i7 with a 5G internet connection so you can stream movies and TV shows uninterrupted through this huge screen.

You can also just make out a widescreen infotainment system in the front. This looks very similar to the setup you get in BMW’s new iX SUV but will doubtless come with a few fancy new i7-exclusive features.

New BMW i7 motors, batteries and range

BMW has confirmed the new i7 will come with between 360 miles of range and 380 miles. likely using the same 100kWh battery as you get in the BMW iX SUV.

it’s possible BMW will offer this new luxury electric car with the option of single- and dual-motor setups, giving the car rear- or four-wheel drive respectively. This would mirror the Mercedes EQS range.

You’ll also be able to charge the new i7 using 200kW public fast-chargers,  meaning you can quickly add a few extra miles of range to help you get home without a long charging session.

New BMW i7 EV alternatives

The BMW i7 will line up alongside i3, iX3, i4 and upcoming i5 models in the company’s range, as BMW plans to have at least 25 electrified models on sale within three years. These won’t all be fully electric cars, some will be mild- and plug-in hybrids instead.

New BMW i7 EV price and release date

The BMW i7 is likely to be revealed in April 2022 before going on sale later in the year. Electric cars tend to be more expensive than their petrol- and diesel-powered equivalents, so the BMW i7 will likely carry a premium over the regular BMW 7 Series. Don’t be surprised if the i7 range ends up starting from around £85,000.
