  • May share electrical components with the iX3
  • 300 miles of range possible
  • To be revealed in 2022
  • On sale in late 2022 / early 2023

The new BMW iX1 is due to be revealed at the end of this year, and some teaser images have been revealed. It’ll be based on the new X1 SUV, meaning petrol and diesel models will also be available.

This will be BMW’s first fully electric small SUV, following the larger iX3 that was released in 2020. It’ll be an alternative to the likes of the Mercedes EQA and is one of 13 new EVs coming from the German brand before 2025. Read on for everything you need to know about this new electric car.

New BMW iX1 design

This is the first teaser image of the new BMW iX1. It continues the BMW trend of huge kidney grilles upfront but these will likely be blanked off.

You can also see a new daytime running light design within a slim and angular housing. It looks like the iX1 will also get some huge air intakes as well.

These spy photos of the BMW iX1 prototype show that the design will remain more or less the same as the X1 SUV. While you can’t see much through the camouflage, it looks like it’ll get the same flush-fitted door handles as the new BMW i4.

Save for a lack of a tailpipe peeking out from beneath the rear bumper, the tail of the upcoming electric SUV also follows the design of the new BMW X1 very closely.

There is a far more prominent rear bumper than the current model and the steeply raked rear roofline mimics that of the slightly sportier BMW X2.

New BMW iX1 performance and range

The BMW iX1 could use similar electric components to the larger iX3 – in range-topping guise at least.

That model produces 286hp and has up to 285 miles of range from its 80kWh battery pack.

You can charge the BMW iX3 using a super-fast 150kW option (offering up to 60-miles or extra range in 10 minutes). It’s likely the new iX3 will also come with a 150kW fast-charging feature.

A home wall-box will take around 12-hours to fully replenish an empty battery.

The current X1 feels sportier to drive than most small SUVs, and you can expect the new iX1 to also be one of the best compact electric SUVs to drive.

New BMW iX1 interior

The new BMW iX1’s interior is likely to be based heavily on today’s 1 Series. It’ll have plenty of high-quality materials throughout and the latest iDrive system.

It may get an infotainment system similar to the larger BMW i4, however, with a curved one-piece screen for the driver’s instrument display and infotainment system.

The electric BMW iX3 loses out on around 40 litres of boot space compared with the petrol- and diesel-powered X3. You can expect the new iX1 electric car to also have a smaller boot than the standard X1.

New BMW iX1 price and release date

BMW hasn’t announced how much the new X1 or iX1 will cost, but it’s a safe bet that the new electric SUV will be significantly more expensive than the outgoing X1.

This means you’ll have to hand over at least a few thousand pounds more than the existing £40,580 plug-in hybrid X1 model to park an iX1 on your drive when it goes on sale. It’s expected to be revealed later in the year, with sales starting in late 2022 or early 2023.
