Drag race: BMW M3 Competition AWD vs Tesla Model 3 vs Audi RS5

What happens when you put three all-wheel-drive super-saloons head to head on the drag strip? Today we find out. 

For today’s race, Mat is behind the wheel of the BMW M3 Competition, and this one’s the all-wheel-drive model. Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six with 510hp and 650Nm of torque.

This is put to the ground via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with launch control. The all-wheel-drive system does add to the weight compared with the standard car; it now weighs 1,780kg.

Next up, we have the Tesla Model 3 Performance. It has a 75kWh battery pack and dual motors providing all-wheel drive. It has 460hp and 640Nm of torque, but it’s also the heaviest car here tipping the scales at 1,850kg.

Finally, we have the Audi RS5 Sportback. Its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 puts out 450hp and 600Nm of torque, put to the tarmac by all-four wheels courtesy of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It has an eight-speed automatic gearbox and it’s the lightest car here at 1,740kg.
