Ground-breaking, game-changing – whatever you call it, there’s no doubt the Mercedes A-Class interior looks like nothing else at this price.
It’s dominated by the two free-standing digital screens that sit on top of the dashboard, but there are lots of neat features. You can have no less than 64 colours of ambient lighting to choose from, for example, and your choice will be reflected in the beautiful turbine-style air vents.
Overall, the quality is very good, too, with part-leather upholstery, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and lots of decent materials used on even the most basic model. However, it’s not perfect, as some of the gloss black materials seem prone to scratches and the row of switches under the centre console feel like something from a child’s toy.
Upgrade the A-Class to AMG Line Edition, and you smarten up the cabin with some extra chrome and some higher-quality trim. The snazzier AMG Line Premium models are tempting too, but they’re not cheap. Still, you’ll get larger screens for the infotainment and the instrument cluster, plus other goodies such as illuminated door sills and an armrest in the second row. The range-topper gets a panoramic sunroof as standard too.
Lord knows, car reviewers are prone to over-exaggerate, but there really is no other word to describe the A-Class’s cabin. It’s stunning

Infotainment
The tech is what takes all the headlines in the Mercedes A-Class, and that’s no surprise given how prominent the two digital displays are on the dashboard. They’re both 7-inch screens as standard, but these can be upgraded to a 10.25-inch units depending on which trim level you go for.
The standard specifications are pretty impressive, with DAB radio and sat-nav included right out of the box, as well as live traffic information and a “Hey Mercedes” voice control system. This lets you tell your A-Class what you want it to do – whether that’s changing the radio station or setting the navigation – just by calling out “hey Mercedes” and then talking to it like you would your Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod.
But that’s not the only way you can interact with the infotainment system. There are small, touch-sensitive panels on the steering wheel, as well as a touchpad on the centre console. The infotainment screen itself is also touch sensitive, so you’re well and truly well catered for. Our one criticism is that not all versions of the A-Class get Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity as standard.
