Mazda CX-30 interior

It’s beautifully designed and superbly built. Sadly, some kit is reserved for only the top two trims.

Style

Every time you get into your CX-30 you’ll feel like you’ve made a fine choice, because everything looks and feels beautiful.

Not only is quality a little bit ahead of that in rivals such as the Seat Ateca, it’s at least a match for the ‘premium’ offerings from brands such as Audi and BMW.

All the materials feels solid or sumptuous as required, and every single knob, button or stalk moves with a  classy, well-damped feel.

The top two trims come with leather seats, which feel good, and all but the base trim has heated seats. No matter which CX-30 you go for, the steering wheel is wrapped in leather, and it’s heated on the top two spec levels.

Infotainment

This is another area in which Mazda is swimming against the tide, because while it has a large 8.8-inch high-definition central display, it isn’t a touchscreen. Instead, it’s operated using a rotary controller down just behind the gearlever, in much the same way as Audi used to do with its MMI system.

This central controller is also flanked by a few shortcut buttons that allow you to get to the function you need quickly. Better still, Mazda has been wise in keeping the climate control system separate from the screen.

The system is reasonably quick and easy to understand, and includes five years’ of free map updates for the standard-fit satellite-navigation system. It also caters for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are much simpler to operate, even without a touchscreen.

All CX-30s have DAB radio, and the top two trim levels upgrade the audio to a thumpingly powerful Bose set-up.
