Cupra Formentor interior

This is a seriously stylish, practical and well built interior. It’s a shame that some of the touch-sensitive tech doesn’t work as well as buttons, though.

Style

The interior looks pretty purposeful, with a two-layer dashboard design and lots of attractive stitching, although we’re not quite so sure about the bronze and blue trims. What was that? Who said Spearmint Rhino? We couldn’t possibly comment.

Still, the materials feel pretty high quality, and even the steering wheel looks and feels a cut above, because it has the starter button and driving mode selector on it. Neat, because it means you don’t have to look elsewhere around the interior to find the way to change how your Formentor drives.

Things aren’t quite so robust in some places elsewhere in the cabin, where items such as the centre console and rear door trims can feel a bit scratchy, but on the whole quality is great.

Infotainment

Front and centre sits a huge high-definition touchscreen that responds quickly to your commands. It comes with satellite navigation, DAB radio and suchlike, but the real bonus is that it caters for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which most people will use most of the time. It’s just easier that way.

Below the screen lie a couple of touch-sensitive ‘slider’ controls for the cabin temperature, which might look neat but in reality they’re a pain to use and nowhere near as quick and precise as a simple button or rotary knob. Worse still, they aren’t even illuminated at night, so you’re reduced to using The Force (more like guesswork) to change the temperature.

Still, ahead of the driver is a comprehensive digital instrument display, which allows you instant access to most of the car’s functions. It’s clear and quick to respond to inputs through the steering-wheel buttons, to the extent that you end up using it more than the central screen.
