Mercedes GLA interior

The Mercedes GLA has a modern, premium interior, but you can spot some scratchy plastics lower down.

Style

The Mercedes GLA’s interior has a very modern feel and the standout feature are the twin infotainment displays like the ones you get in the Mercedes A-Class hatchback and the equally cool-looking turbine-style air vents.

The further up the range you go, the classier the interior looks thanks to some extra carbon-fibre effect trims and coloured stitching on the seats. All models get plenty of cool-to-the touch buttons that feel posher than the plastic bits you get in most alternatives.

Overall, the interior quality is high, with nice materials on the dashboard and the doors. There are some scratchy, hard plastics a bit further down, though.

Avoid the entry-level Sport trim if you can. The twin screens are quite small and don't look as cool.

Infotainment

The infotainment system uses Mercedes’ latest software and it’s the best of its kind on the market.

You can control it by using the touchscreen, a touchpad, short-cut buttons on the steering wheel or by voice controls (but these can be a bit hit and miss at understanding your commands). You can also get the augmented reality sat-nav which overlays the directions on a live video feed from a camera above the car’s windscreen. Just the thing to help you navigate confusing roundabouts.

It’s just a shame that the entry-level GLA misses out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Still, the menus are clear and the system can remember your preferences over time, such as the radio stations you regularly listen to on your way home from work and will recognise the routes you drive frequently and program the sat-nav accordingly.

The digital driver’s display is very good too, and you’re able to change the info you see and the layout using a button on the steering wheel.
