BMW i4 interior

The interior is as you would expect from a BMW. It’s well put together and the infotainment is excellent, but Mercedes adds more flair to its cabins.

Style

As with other BMW interiors, it’s not bonkers or boring. It slots in the middle by being understated and it offers all you’ll ever need.

Mercedes and Audi don’t currently have electric rivals on sale, but the i4’s cabin design is easily smart enough to compete with the latest Mercedes C-Class and the Audi A5 Sportback. It’s also a more interesting, upmarket environment than the Tesla Model 3.

Material quality is also as good as it gets for an EV at this price point.  This and other BMWs remain well ahead in this respect – all the surfaces feel solid and the materials used throughout feel upmarket.

You get cloth upholstery as standard if you’re a bit more eco-friendly, but BMW still offers leather trims for added luxury if you so desire.

Infotainment

BMW has made leaps and bounds with its infotainment system, and the latest version of iDrive is the smoothest yet.

When you use it on the curved screen fitted in the i4, the latest iDrive 8 software feels super smooth and as with the previous version, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available. You might want to use those services for full hands-free, as BMW’s voice command system needs a bit more work. Everything else like the sat-nav and media menus work really well, however.

BMW has moved the climate control onto the bottom edge of the screen, though, which isn’t as easy to use as buttons on the centre console.

Another area of improvement in the i4 is BMW’s instrument display. The layout is similar to more recent BMW models, but it’s much clearer to read and has much more information for you. It’s still not the best instrument screen around, but it’s much better than on the 4 Series.

The single panel used to house both the instrument and infotainment screen is a real highlight, and it’s a bonus it’s standard across all i4 models.
