BMW iX3 interior

The interior is pretty much the same as in an X3, so well built and roomy, but there are rather too many blue highlights.

Style

bmw

The  BMW iX3 ‘s stylish cabin looks exactly the same as the one in the X3 SUV, mainly because it is the same, bar a few look-at-me-I’m-electric highlights, such as the blue highlights on the gear selector, the blue starter button and the blue mood lighting. It definitely doesn’t have the same wow factor as the Mercedes EQC’s elegant swooping centre console design.

Almost every piece of plastic trim on the dashboard and centre console feels soft and yielding and you’ll have to reach right down into the door bins before you’ll find any hard brittle plastics.

The iX3 comes in two spec levels. The lower of the two, called Premier Edition, comes with a 12-inch digital driver’s display and 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charging, electrically adjustable leather seats, electrically opening boot lid, adaptive suspension (which lets you choose between soft, comfortable settings and stiffer, sportier ones) and a panoramic glass roof.

The higher of the two, which is called Premier Edition Pro, is fitted with a Harman Kardon stereo, a head-up display, a system that’ll automatically steer you into parking spaces, automatic headlights, adjustable lumbar support for the front seats and gesture control for the infotainment system.

However, the range will be expanded with cheaper models a few months down the line.

Infotainment

There are some shortcut buttons down on the centre console and an intuitive scroll wheel to help you click through the various menus without taking your eyes off the road for too long.

Satellite navigation comes as standard, and it’s easy to input a postcode using either the on-screen keyboard or the touchpad on top of the scroll-wheel. It gives clear, easy-to-follow directions and it’s easy to add or remove waypoints from your route.

The iX3 featires both a 10-inch central touchscreen and 12-inch driver’s information display. This latter high-resolution screen replaces conventional analogue speedo and rev-counter dials.

On the Premier Edition Pro, you can even get your BMW iX3 with a high-resolution head-up-display system that’ll beam your speed, the current speed limit and upcoming sat-nav directions onto the windscreen.

This higher-spec model also comes with gesture controls for the stereo. Spin your finger in front of the central screen and you can raise or lower the stereo volume – to the inevitable amazement of your younger passengers. More useful is the ability to dismiss potentially awkward phone calls with a swipe of your hand. However, it’s a shame your gestures aren’t consistently recognised by the system.

Still, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring are both standard, and neither requires the phone to be plugged in, which is convenient.

The standard stereo is fairly loud and reasonably bassy but the Harman Kardon unit in
