Toyota Yaris Cross interior

Function takes priority over form, but the cabin is still a reasonably attractive and very well-made place to spend time

Style

The Toyota Yaris Cross might not hold a candle to the likes of the Peugeot 2008 when it comes to straight up interior style appeal, but it’s still far from dull in here.

You get some smart fabric upholstery on the doors, and practically every inch of the dash is covered in rubbery, soft-touch plastic that gives the Toyota a bit of additional upmarket appeal. A striking strip of bronze trim runs from the doors through the centre of the dash, and on all but the entry-level model there’s some cool blue ambient lighting too.

Being a Toyota, there’s a reassuring sense of solidity about the place too. Everything feels very well screwed together, and there aren’t any flimsy-feeling switches or stalks to bring the overall sense of quality down.

Meanwhile, the seats are only available with part-leather upholstery, but they hold you in place nicely and are impressively comfortable over distance. The front seats are heated on cars in Excel specification and above, and a heated steering wheel is also available.

Infotainment

There are two different infotainment systems available with the Yaris Cross. Entry-level Icon and Design models come with an 8-inch touchscreen with in-built navigation, DAB radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Move up to the pricier Excel, Dynamic and Premiere Edition models and you’ll get a larger 9-inch touchscreen, as well as a wireless connection for those smartphone mirroring programs.

The system itself is very straightforward to use, but in terms of the quality of its graphics and its responsiveness it’s a bit behind the times. Give the screen a prod and there’s a noticeable amount of lag. Still, the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard is welcome, and it’s likely you will just end up linking your smartphone up and using them instead.

You also have the option of speccing an uprated JBL sound system. This comes as standard on limited-run Premiere Edition cars, and is available as a £450 option on Dynamic and Excel grade. Sound quality is decent enough, but it likely won’t blow you away.
