Cupra Born interior

The Cupra Born has a sporty-feeling interior, but some of the controls are a little frustrating to use

Style

As with its aggressive, sharp-edged exterior, the Cupra Born’s cabin has been decked out to make it appear more sporty. So you get some supportive bucket seats that hold you snugly in place, and which are upholstered in a sporty-looking suede-like material that’s made from recycled ocean plastic.

Jazzy copper-coloured trim inserts to match those on the exterior are available for the dash, centre console and air vent surrounds; while matching copper-coloured stitching on the Cupra multifunction steering wheel and seat upholstery also help to make the Born’s interior pop.

The Born’s layout is noticeably clutter free, with practically all controls being relegated either to the steering wheel or the large 12-inch touchscreen that’s mounted on the dashtop. While this might help to lend the Born a trendily minimalist appearance, this does come at the cost of some outright usability.

Infotainment

Here’s the deal with the Cupra Born’s infotainment: it looks snazzy, but leaves a fair bit to be desired in terms of its actual functionality.

The 12-inch touchscreen can be really quite slow when it comes to responding to your inputs, and the actual jump from one menu to the next isn’t as slick as the sharp pictures on screen suggest it should be.

As with the Volkswagen ID.3, practically all of the Cupras heating and ventilation controls have been housed within the screen itself. This might lend the dashboard a nice, clean look; but the buttons used to access the air-con menu and change fan settings and adjust the temperature are small and hard to get your fingers on when you’re actually on the move.

Admittedly, there are a couple of physical slider controls positioned directly beneath the screen that can be used to do the same job, but for whatever reason they aren’t backlit, and are impossible to find in the dark.

Still, at least the Born comes with plenty of tech. You get satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto too. Wireless charging is available for your smartphone, and the My Cupra app will allow you to monitor charge levels and precondition the car so that it’s up to temperature before you hop in.
