Land Rover Discovery interior

The Discovery’s interior looks smart and luxurious, and even more so since the 2021 update. Even base models now offer a good level of standard kit.

Style

The Land Rover Discovery can offer an interior that gets close to the plushness found in a luxurious Range Rover, but whereas before that involved splashing out for the pricey high-end trims, even the cheapest versions are decently equipped.

Trim levels have been simplified for 2021: There are now three versions: The ‘base’ Discovery, the sportier-looking Discovery R-Dynamic and a Commercial version, which ditches the rear seats in favour of a large loadbay.

The ‘base’ Discovery is only available in S trim, but whereas that was a little basic before kit levels have improved. Sat-nav and leather upholstery are now standard, while 20in wheels, LED headlights, an electric tailgate and a digital driver’s display are all thrown in.

There’s also a cool new 360-degree, 3D surround camera for parking and tight manoeuvres that shows you loads of different angles from outside the car.

If you want to upgrade to SE or HSE trim you’ll now have to select the R-Dynamic version, with its more style-focused exterior. It’s a pity you can no longer have the subtle exterior look with the plusher trims, however.

Still, SE offers everything you’d reasonably need, including upgraded LED headlights with auto high beam, 21in alloys, 18-way electric memory seats with heating, an electric steering wheel, a Meridian sound system and a large array of driver assist features.

Flagship HSE trim adds Adaptive Cruise control, full surround sound, premium multi-colour cabin lighting, 20-way electric, heated cooled front seats coated in softer Windsor leather, 22in wheels and Matrix LED headlights. There’s also a gesture function for the tailgate, although these are rarely that beneficial.

Overall, the Discovery’s cabin is improved all-round, both in the way it looks and the upmarket feel of the things you touch.

Infotainment

Watch our Land Rover Discovery infotainment and interior review

Unlike the older version of this Discovery, which disappointingly didn’t get sat-nav as standard, every model now gets Land Rover’s latest infotainment system across the board.

It’s a greatly improved system overall, not only because of its slick-looking 11.4in curved display and neat integration in the dash. It’s also much more responsive than before, with crisper graphics and the ability to receive over-the-air updates that are done without you needing to visit a dealer.

You can also connect two smartphones at once via Bluetooth and the car has its own eSIM for various data services. It’s simpler to navigate than before, although BMW’s system which also offers a rotary click wheel to control things is easier to use on the move.

The standard sound-system is perfectly reasonable, But the 12 speaker, 400w Meridian sound system is better for those who like their tunes. The 14 speaker, 700W Meridian surround sound is properly immersive.
