Porsche Macan interior

The Porsche Macan’s cabin looks great and feels plush, but if you want to make it look even better you’ll need to spend a wedge of cash on expensive options

Style

Space in the back is a little bit tight for tall people

The Porsche Macan might be the baby SUV in the range but its cabin feels almost as upmarket as the larger Cayenne’s – if a little dark on basic models without fancy trim pieces.

Loads of leather and plenty of cold-to-the-touch metal pieces make it feel plusher than, say, a low-end BMW X3, and the thin, three-spoke steering wheel and dashboard-mounted clock come straight out of the 911’s sports-car playbook.

Foe 2021, the main upgrades centre around the removal of the dated banks of plastic buttons that were littered around the gearlever. That really dated the older Macan, but instead there’s now a glossy black panel with touch sensitive buttons neatly backlit.

Often touch sensitive controls can be fiddly, but Porsches are nice to use and give you clear feedback so you know it’s responded. The best thing is, though, that unlike the old Macan there isn’t rows of blank switches to remind you that you haven’t forked out for certain options.

There’s really no limit to how posh you can make the Macan’s interior, if you’re willing spend a few quid that is. The options list lets you deck out the cabin in vast swathes of metal trim or, if you’re feeling particularly flush, real carbon fibre trim pieces.

The 10.9-inch infotainment screen is a vast improvement on the seven-inch screen you used to get and it has high-def graphics and a glassy sheen that looks expensive. Its increased width means the centre air vents sit a little too low to be as efficient, though.

Infotainment

Space in the back is a little bit tight for tall people

All Macans come with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard. Its high-definition display is bursting with colours, making it more than a match for the displays that you’ll find in an Audi or BMW.

Flicking between menus on the screen can be a tricky when you’re driving – you don’t get the fixed rotary control you get in BMWs– but once you’re on the right page the large tiles it’s separated into are easy to navigate through.

The new system doesn’t suffer from the lag you got in the old one so you can punch in a postcode and get the route to your destination calculated in no time. Apple CarPlay (Android Auto will likely come in a further software update in 2022) is also included if you’d rather use the maps on your smartphone.

The Macan comes with a fairly punchy 11-speaker stereo but you can also upgrade to Bose system or go the whole hog on a Burmester stereo that sounds the business.
