Volkswagen Arteon R interior

A few sporty touches liven up a solid and classy cabin, though VW interiors aren’t as easy to get along with as they used to be

Style

The overall interior design of the Arteon R will of course be familiar to anyone who has driven the latest standard model. However, all the usual R-specific design touches are there, you just have to seek them out.

The first thing you’ll notice is a pair of figure-hugging sports seats in the front. These look good and hold you in place well without sacrificing comfort, but the integrated headrests means the rear passengers have to crane their necks round to see forward.

Further R-specific details include blue highlights… everywhere. It’s the signature colour of R, you see. There’s blue stitching on the seats, the door mats and the door cards themselves, plus blue ambient lighting and a sports steering wheel with (yep, you guessed it) blue detailing.

The sportier additions go some way to lifting the Arteon R’s cabin, which is solid and unpretentious but lacks the flair and material richness of the equivalent BMW. At least equipment levels are good: items such as a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control with lane assist and a heated steering wheel are all standard.

Infotainment

Bar a few menus and features that are added specifically to the R model, the infotainment system is the same we’ve seen in the Arteon since 2020.

It’s a pretty good set-up, with sharp graphics and instant responses to your touch. It’s easy to navigate, too.

Better still, it has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and both of these work wirelessly and seamlessly. Most of the time you’ll end up using these systems instead of the native VW one, because they’re quick, efficient and do what you need them to.

The central screen is also linked to the digital driver’s display that’s standard on every Arteon. This is bright, clear, and you can configure it just the way you want – albeit with the annoying steering wheel-mounted controls.

Additional features for the R include new displays that can display G-meters or tell you how much power and torque you’re using. There’s also an ‘R’ shortcut button on the steering wheel, which lets you bypass the sometimes fiddly drive mode customisation for one click into its sportiest mode.

If you want a head-up display that project useful driving information onto the windscreen, as well as an uprated Harmon/Kardon sound system and 360-degree parking camera, you can option the Technology Pack Plus for £3650.
