Volvo C40 Recharge interior

The Volvo C40 Recharge has a plush cabin that looks and feels great. The infotainment system is pretty slick too, but it doesn’t get Apple CarPlay (yet) and some important controls are buried away in submenus

Style

Volvo C40 Recharge, interior

The Volvo C40 Recharge won’t leave you feeling short-changed when it comes to interior style appeal. It follows the lead of the regular XC40 Recharge SUV in adopting a clean, minimalist, lounge-like approach to its interior layout, but there are a couple of styling tweaks that are unique to this particular model.

The first, and arguably most notable of these upgrades, is the vivid, ’Fjord Blue’ fabric that covers the floors and large sections of the interior door trims. Not only does this material feel nice and soft, it makes the C40’s cabin look really quite funky, and injects a fun level of colour to contrast against the cool silvers, blacks and greys that make up the rest of the interior. You can have the carpets finished in black if you want, but the Fjord Blue colour scheme is a no-cost option, so why not go for it?

The second detail that’s unique to the C40 Recharge are the stylised trim inserts that are set within the dashboard. Finished in a cool off-white, silvery shade, these panels are filled in with contour-line patterns that are supposedly inspired by Swedish mountains. The panels themselves are backlit, and they look super smart. You can have these in dark grey if you’d prefer.

Then there’s the standard-fit panoramic sunroof, which adds to the C40 Recharge’s lounge-like appeal by flooding the cabin with additional natural light. Sure, there are a few scratchier plastics in the lower reaches of the cabin, but make no mistake: this is a very swish interior indeed.

Infotainment

Volvo C40 Recharge, interior

The C40 Recharge comes with Volvo’s latest Android-based infotainment system as standard. Powered by Google, it lets you easily plug in sat-nav directions on its crisp, responsive screen, and you can even sync your Spotify account to seamlessly listen to music while on the go.

The ‘Hey Google’ voice assistant works well and responds without you having to repeat your commands by continuously shouting at the system; and you can download over-the-air updates to ensure that your C40 Recharge is running the latest available software.

It all works very well indeed, and the 9-inch touchscreen looks fantastic. The only problem with the new system is that this Android-based operating system doesn’t yet support Apple CarPlay – although an upcoming over-the-air software update will put that right

Altering your regenerative braking settings and driver aides is a bit of a faff too. This is because all of the controls are housed within submenus within the infotainment system. So instead of having a handy button on the centre console that you can quickly use to activate or deactivate lane-keep assist, or to ramp up the forcefulness of the car’s regen system, you have to take your eyes off the road and prod around on the screen.
