Land Rover has revealed the new plug-in hybrid version of the Discovery Sport SUV. This new P300e model can travel almost 40 miles on a charge and is on sale now, priced from £45,370.

New Land Rover Discovery Sport PHEV engine and motor

The new P300e version of the Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with a 200hp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine at the front and a compact 109hp electric motor at the back. This means the new Discovery Sport PHEV gets four-wheel drive as standard. You also get an eight-speed automatic gearbox in every Land Rover Discovery Sport plug-in hybrid.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport PHEV’s engine and motor produce a combined 309hp.

New Land Rover Discovery Sport PHEV performance and driving

Brim its batteries and the new Land Rover Discovery Sport PHEV can drive for 38 miles using just electric power. Charging its batteried from empty using a 7kw wall-mounted home charger takes just under 90 minutes, but you can charge it from empty to 80% full in half an hour using a 32kw public charging point.

Fully charging the Discovery Sport PHEV’s batteries takes about an hour and a half using a home charger.

Once the batteries are empty, the petrol engine takes over, but when they’re working together, Land Rover claims the Discovery Sport plug-in hybrid will return more than 175mpg. You probably won’t manage to match that figure in normal day-to-day driving, however.

The electric motor isn’t just there to help reduce fuel consumption – it also delivers an extra boost of power that’ll let the Discovery Sport PHEV accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 6.6 seconds. You can choose how the electric motor behaves by switching between the Discovery’s different driving modes. Save mode uses the petrol engine to recharge the onboard batteries, EV mode switches the petrol engine off and relies on the electric motor while Hybrid mode uses both the engine and the motor at once.
