New Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 and 53 revealed: price, specs and release date

These are the new Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 and 53 models – the latest high-performance electric cars from AMG and serious alternatives to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Read on for more details.

This is the new Mercedes AMG EQE. It comes in two versions (called the EQE 43 and EQE 53) with up to 678hp and 331 miles of range.
This new alternative to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 is expected to go on sale before 2023 but could cost more than £100,000 if you go for a fully kitted-out model with the power-boosting AMG Dynamic Plus pack.
New Mercedes-AMG EQE design
AMG is more than capable of designing a wild-looking car (just check out the GT Black Series) but the new AMG EQE looks pretty much identical to the standard AMG-Line EQE.
There are a few new vertical chrome bars around the Mercedes three-pointed star, but the bumper, headlights and fake intakes all look the same.
It’s a similar story from the side, where the AMG EQE inherits the standard car’s computer-mouse-like silhouette. The alloy wheels are new, at least. You get 2-inch alloy s as standard but 21-inch wheels are available (and a must-have if you also want the upgraded carbon-ceramic brakes).
AMG made a few more tweaks to the EQE’s backside to make these new 43 and 53 models. There’s a taller piece of black trim around the number plate and a couple of extra intakes behind the rear wheel arches, but that’s your lot.
It isn’t exactly a daring redesign, but at least it’s easier to spot what makes this EQE a high-performance AMG version – unlike the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which looks exactly the same as an entry-level car.

AMG has given the EQE a few subtle interior upgrades, a bit like the ones you get in the bigger, more powerful AMG EQS 53.
There are some more supportive seats with different stitching and a couple of AMG logos on the headrests along with a new flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Unfortunately, the eye-popping ‘Hyperscreen’ infotainment system (shown in these photos) is optional – just like in the standard EQE. At least you do get some new AMG-specific menus for it with racier graphics and a dedicated lap-timer.

The new AMG EQE comes in two different flavors – an entry-level AMG 43 and a faster, more powerful AMG 53.
The AMG EQE 43 comes with dual motors that are powered by an upgraded AMG-tuned electrical system to deliver a total of 476hp and 858Nm of torque. It’ll accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds – about 0.9 seconds slower than a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
The new AMG EQE 53 is a very different animal. For a start, it comes with different motors that were developed especially for this AMG version. The upshot is they churn out 626hp and blast the 53 from 0-609mph in 3.5 seconds.
If that isn’t fast enough, there’s also an optional AMG Dynamic Plus pack available for 53 versions that bump power up to 687hp and cut the car’s 0-60mph sprint time to 3.3 seconds. That’s exactly the same as the Model 3 Performance manages.
New Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 & 53 batteries and range
How have AMG’s high-performance upgrades affected the EQE’s range? The normal rear-wheel drive EQE comes with a 90kWh battery that gives it up to 410 miles of range. That’s about 5 miles more than a standard Tesla Model S.
The four-wheel-drive AMG 43 and 53 versions also use 90kWh battery, but they can’t use their power quite as efficiently as the normal car. Mercedes says the 43 model has up to 331 miles of range, and the 53 can manage up to 322 miles.
You’ll be able to recharge it using the same 170kW fast-chargers as a normal EQE, though. This means a quick 15 minute charge will give you around 110 miles of extra range.
New Mercedes-AMG EQE price and release date
Mercedes hasn’t said how much the new AMG EQE will cost. But you can bet it’ll be a lot more expensive than the normal EQE. That car hasn’t gone on sale yet, but it’s expected to cost from more than £60,000.
This means you might end up paying more than £80,000 for an AMG EQS 43, and more than £100,000 for a top-spec 53 model.
