Mercedes C-Class 4Matic gets a grip with all-wheel drive

Mercedes expands its high performance C43 range while adding 4Matic all-wheel drive to more models in the lineup
The Mercedes C-Class continues its assault on the compact executive sector with new high performance models and an expanded all-wheel drive range. The Audi A4, Jaguar XE and BMW 3 Series rival also gets a new mid-range trim ideally suited to business and family buyers.

4Matic all-wheel drive offered on more models
To counter the popularity of Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive models, Mercedes will include 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option across more of the C-Class range. The system’s now offered on the C 200 Coupe and the C 220 d and C 250 d saloon and Estate variants. It’ll set you back an extra £1,500 over an equivalent rear-wheel drive model.
Expanded Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic lineup
Enthusiastic drivers will be keen to know Mercedes has expanded the C43 range. The engine can now be specified in saloon and Estate bodyshapes in addition to the already announced Coupe. These models all get 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard, sit below the full-fat AMG C63 and directly rival the Audi S4, Jaguar XE S and BMW 340i.
Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre V6 boosted by twin-turbochargers to produce 367hp. This beefy engine help the saloon and Coupe models to hit 62mph from rest in 4.7 seconds while the Estate takes a further 0.2 seconds. A nine-speed automatic gearbox is standard and options include AMG sports seats and a performance exhaust costing £1,405 and £1,000 respectively.
New SE Executive Edition trim
Entry-level SE C-Classes weren’t sparse but, for almost all buyers, newly launched SE Executive Edition might be a better bet. Costing £1,295 more than standard SE, it essentially adds the existing Executive pack to the car’s standard equipment for the same price – while it doesn’t offer anything new, we definitely recommend it for the basics it adds.
Included in the pack are heated front seats, Garmin built-in sat-nav, 17-inch alloy wheels, active parking assistance and sensors, 40:20:40 split fold rear seats and silver roof rails for Estate models. For the price, we can’t really see any reason not to pick this trim level.
