New 2022 Mercedes EQB revealed: prices, specs and release date

This is the Mercedes EQB, a seven-seater, all-electric SUV. The latest in a growing line of electric EQ models from Mercedes, it’s effectively an electric version of the GLB and will be a practical alternative to the Volkswagen ID4, BMW iX3 and Tesla Model Y when it goes on sale in late 2021.
2022 Mercedes EQB design
The overall profile of the Mercedes EQB is very similar to the GLB on which it’s based, albeit with a number of changes to distinguish it as an electric car.
You’ll notice the blanked-off grille up front — after all, there’s no need to cool an engine — with a huge Mercedes three-pointed star in the middle. Below that is a curvaceous intake design with headlights that closely follow the rounded design of the front end.
The side of the car is more or less identical to the GLB, albeit with different alloy wheel designs up to 20-inches, though changes at the back are a little more drastic.
There’s a full-width light bar stretching across the back, similar to that on the Mercedes EQA, albeit with a flat, rather than swooping, design. The bumper gets a bit of chrome trim that sort of looks to mimic exhaust exits too — of course, there’s no need for real ones on an electric car.
2022 Mercedes EQB batteries and range
At launch, the Mercedes EQB will come in EQB 350 guise with a 66.5kWh battery pack.
This will come with up to 297 miles of range and is compatible with 100kW rapid charging. Using this, you can top-up the batteries from 10% to 80% full in 30 minutes.
Mercedes has confirmed ‘several models’ of the EQB will be available though, so expect to see a few extra versions revealed before the car goes on sale in late 2021. These will include front- and four-wheel-drive versions, with the most powerful producing more than 272hp.
A long-range version of the EQB has been confirmed to be in development as well, which is likely to use a larger battery pack.
2022 Mercedes EQB interior and infotainment
The interior of the Mercedes EQB has been more or less lifted straight from the GLB, albeit with some tweaks to give it its own flavour.
Dotted around the cabin are blue lighting strips and stitching to remind you that yes, this is a Mercedes EQ model, as well as some new dashboard trims.
You’ll get Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system and a digital driver’s display comprising two 10-inch screens with support for the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant. Sat nav is a standard-fit feature too, and will allow you to program your routes to take in fast public charging points.
The Mercedes EQB is a five-seat electric car as standard, though you do get the option of a third row to make it a seven-seater. Mercedes says anyone 5 foot 4-inches and under will be able to sit here comfortably, so it looks to be an ideal electric family car.
Boot space for seven-seat models is 465 litres, or 30 litres less than the five-seat car’s 495-litre load bay.
2022 Mercedes EQB safety and driver assistance
There’s loads of clever safety tech packed into the Mercedes EQB. You’ll get stuff like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance as standard, with other features such as a pedestrian and cyclist warning detection system.
On top of that, the adaptive cruise control system is able to accelerate, brake and steer for you on motorways. It can even leave room for emergency vehicles to pass and manage the EQB’s regenerative braking system automatically when you’re approaching hills or junctions.
2022 Mercedes EQB price and release date
The Mercedes EQB will go on sale across Europe in late 2021. No word yet on pricing, though expect it to carry a premium over the smaller EQA’s £43,495 starting price — possibly north of £45,000.
