  • SUV looks to have grown in size
  • Will sit between Hyundai Bayon and larger Tucson
  • Could carry existing engine lineup over
  • Hyundai Kona Electric to return
  • 2023 reveal expected

A new version of the Hyundai Kona is in the works, confirmed by these photos of an all-new car being tested.

This small family SUV looks to have grown in size over the existing car and will continue to serve as an alternative to cars like the Nissan Juke and Volkswagen T-Roc when it goes on sale in round 2023.

New Hyundai Kona design

Finer design details are hard to spot under the heavy camouflage, but it appears as though this Hyundai Kona has grown in size over the current car.

The introduction of the smaller Bayon and the growth of the latest Hyundai Tucson gives the Kona room to bulk up. It seems this Kona is slightly wider and has a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). This should mean it has a larger, more practical interior than today’s car.

Small cutouts at the front suggest the new Hyundai Kon will have a split headlight design (just like today’s car). It’s harder to distinguish how the rear will look.

Aftermarket alloy wheels look to have been fitted to this prototype too, so you expect to see a different design on the production car.

New Hyundai Kona interior and infotainment

Expect the growth of the Hyundai Kona to translate into more interior space. In terms of design, it could borrow the wide dashboard vents from the latest Bayon, and you can bet it’ll come with a flashy new infotainment system, too.

It’s likely the Kona will use a similar interior to the Bayon (pictured)

Don’t bet against it having a pair of 10.25-inch screens – a central touchscreen and a separate digital driver’s display.

The new car – if indeed larger – could have more boot space than today’s Kona, which can carry 374 litres of luggage.

New Hyundai Kona engines and Kona Electric

It’s previously been reported Hyundai has ended the development of internal combustion engines, however, it has denied these claims.

As a result, you can expect to see a similar engine lineup in the new Kona as offered in the current car. This would include petrol options as well as hybrids.

A Hyundai Kona Electric is expected to return as well. This could nab tech from the Ioniq 5 — meaning a 77.4kWh battery with around 250 miles of range.

New Hyundai Kona price and release date

Expect to see the new Hyundai Kona sometime in 2023. Pricing will likely rise over the current model, which starts at £21,615.
