New BMW 8 Series and M8 revealed: price, specs and release date

Updated versions of the BMW 8 Series and M8 have been revealed and are on sale now. Read on for all you need to know.

The new BMW M8 has been revealed, along with the 8 Series. This grand tourer will still be available as a coupe, convertible and a four-door Gran Coupe.
The updated 8 Series is available to order now and provides an alternative to the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7.
New BMW 8 Series design
The BMW 8 Series has always been a very handsome car, and it’s a good job too because the changes are difficult to spot.
Up front, the 8 Series lineup still avoids the huge grilles of the BMW M3 and M4 in favour of something a bit more subdued, while the side profile remains sleek and sporty.
The four-door Gran Coupe is around 200mm longer than the standard coupe, offering rear passengers more legroom than in the shorter two-door car.
The front kidney grilles are now illuminated with vertical slats (a look-at-me-feature borrowed from the BMW X6), plus all cars come with the M Sport pack as standard that includes an aggressive bodykit and large alloy wheels.
The rear end remains more or less unchanged. The M8 still has quad tailpipes and a carbon rear diffuser, while the 8 Series gets a more subtle bumper with twin exhausts.
New BMW 8 Series interior and infotainment
The interior of the updated BMW 8 Series also appears to be similar to the current car. It’s still very well made and the design still looks modern but you don’t get the flashy one-piece widescreen infotainment system like in the BMW iX SUV and the new i4 electric car.
That’s not to say BMW hasn’t tweaked the new 8 Series’ tech – you get a slightly larger infotainment screen with a new 12.3-inch digital drivers display. An upgraded Harmon/Kardon sound system also comes as standard.
The new 8 Series is available with updated interior colours, including two-tone leather options and Alcantara trim. The rest of the interior is still finished to the same high standard, with quality leather and plenty of metallic details around the cabin.
The M8 can also be specified with additional carbon fibre.
New BMW 8 Series engines and driving
The main change to the engine lineup in the new BMW 8 Series is that the Diesel 840d has been removed from the range.
This leaves two petrol-powered options. The entry-level 840i gets a 3.0-litre six-cylinder with 333hp and 500Nm of torque with a rear-wheel-drive setup.
The M850i has a 4.4-litre V8 with 530hp and 750Nm of torque, along with an all-wheel-drive system.
New BMW M8
The flagship BMW M8 has also been updated for 2022 with some new styling and trim options.
The engine remains the same as before, a 4.4-litre V8 with 625hp and 750Nm of torque. The M8 also has all-wheel-drive, however you can select rear-wheel drive if you want some tyre smoking action on the track.
The M8 is offered in a range of new colours, including the Isle of Man green found on the BMW M3. It’s still offered in coupe, convertible and four-door Gran Coupe body styles.
The exterior design remains as muscular as ever, with a slightly revised front bumper for this latest version. Down the side you’ll find wider wheel arches to give a better stance on the road, as well as some new alloy wheel designs.

The new BMW 8 Series and M8 are available to order now, with deliveries expected to start in the spring.
The 8 Series range starts at £72,225 for a base 840i version, rising to £123,300 for the flagship M8.
