The Cupra Born is the first all-electric model to come from Seat’s performance brand.
This all-new alternative to the Volkswagen ID3 is on sale now with a choice of two battery options and two different electric motors. It costs from £34,715.
New Cupra Born price and specs
You can choose from three different Cupra Born models. The cheapest versions come with a 58kWh battery and a 204hp electric motor. These cost from £34,715.
A more powerful 230hp e-Boost version with the same battery costs from £37,445, while top-spec e-Boost cars with 230hp and a larger 77kWh battery will set you back at least £40,215.
Cupra Born V1
The entry level V1 version of the Cupra Born starts from £34,715. This gets you a 204hp car with a 58kWh battery, some 18-inch Alloy Wheels, LED lights, a 12-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, a reversing camera and a digital drivers display.
Cupra Born V2
£36,635 will get you the mid-spec V2 model with the same 204hp motor and 58kWh battery. These come with larger 19-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, heated seats and a head-up display, in addition to all the kit you get on the entry-level car.
An extra £810 buys you a more powerful 230hp version, while £3,580 gets you a larger 77Kwh battery.
Cupra Born V3
Top-of-the-range V3 models of the Cupra Born get the more powerful 230hp electric motor as standard. They also come with electrically adjustable sports seats with massage functions and 20-inch alloy wheels. The Cupra Born V3 costs from £39,195 if you pick a 58kWh battery, and £41,975 for the bigger 77kWh battery.
New Cupra Born design
The new Cupra Born stays faithful to the el-Born concept in terms of design. The overall style of the production version is very similar to the concept – if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it…
The side profile is very similar to the Volkswagen ID3, which is no surprise seeing as they are basically the same car underneath. The Cupra does plenty to differentiate itself, mainly thanks to the more aggressive front end styling with real air intakes. The Cupra Born also comes with 18-inch wheels as standard.
All Borns come with a wide lightbar at the back – just like the bigger Cupra Formentor – and there’s a body-coloured diffuser in the bumper. Although, how much diffusing is that going to do, really…?
New Cupra Born interior and infotainment
The Cupra Born’s interior is laid out pretty similarly to the Volkswagen ID3. This shouldn’t come as a surprise – both cars start life as the same set of electrical components.
Cupra is building a reputation for copper coloured accents, and this hasn’t changed with the Born. It livens up the cabin nicely and isn’t as garish as the traditional hot hatchback red.
You can also choose between faux-suede (or Dinamica as Cupra calls it) bucket seats or Seaqual yarn, a material made from recycled bottles fished out of the sea.
A 12-inch infotainment screen comes as standard, which is shared with other cars in the Volkswagen range. This means you get the controversial touch bar for the climate controls, but otherwise the system works well enough. You also get a digital driver’s display and an augmented reality heads-up display.
New Cupra Born range and performance
You can choose from two different-sized batteries in the Cupra Born: 58kWh or 77kWh.
Versions with a 58kWh battery come with up to 264 miles of range but 77kWh cars can manage 340 miles (according to Cupra, at least.)
All versions support up to 125kW fast-charging, which can give the Cupra Born up to 62 miles of extra range in seven minutes.
No matter your battery choice, the Cupra Born uses a single motor. Entry-level cars have 204hp but top-spec versions get 231hp to play with. The quickest of the lot is the 231hp car with a 58kWh battery. These can sprint from 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds.
