A long-wheelbase version of the Suzuki Jimny is in development, with prototypes of the 4×4 spotted testing. Read on for more details.

  • Suzuki Jimny long wheelbase spotted
  • Extended version of dinky 4×4
  • Likely to be a two-seat commercial vehicle
  • 1.5-litre petrol engine
  • Could go on sale in early 2022
  • Prices around £18,000 expected

A long-wheelbase version of the Suzuki Jimny looks to be on the horizon, with prototypes of the cult-favourite 4×4 spotted testing. Stringent emissions regulations mean it’ll likely be sold in commercial vehicle guise only, like the standard car now is, and is expected to cost from around £18,000.

2022 Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase design

These prototypes of the Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase suggest there’s not much in the way of visual changes over the standard version of the compact 4×4.

The extra length of this Jimny means a longer rear window

Upfront, it still looks to retain its slotted grille and retro-looking face, while the back still has low-set brake lights and a spare wheel mounted to the side-opening bootlid.

Design details should pretty much mimic the standard car

The real change is the extended wheelbase, resulting in a longer body. It won’t do much to change the looks, but there appears to be a longer rear window at the back as well as an extended roof. There’s a chance this car could be an early prototype for a Jimny pickup, with a practical open load bed instead of a boxy back end.

2022 Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase interior

Expect an interior all but identical to the Suzuki Jimny Commercial (pictured), albeit with more load space

With the Suzuki Jimny now only available as a commercial vehicle in Europe due to more stringent emissions regulations, expect the long-wheelbase version to be the same. That’ll mean you’ll get two seats up front, and a large load area at the rear. Whether or not this will take the shape of an enclosed boot or an open pickup bed remains to be seen…

The longer wheelbase will mean more space in the back of this Jimny too, so it’d likely be more suitable as a regular workhouse than the standard car.

You should get an infotainment system included though, with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as an in-built satellite navigation system. Creature comforts beyond that will be limited to air conditioning and a small display within the dials and gauges.

2022 Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase engine

It’s almost certain this Jimny will use the 1.5-litre engine from the standard car

Expect the Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase to use the same 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine as the standard car. It produces 102hp and 130Nm of torque, which it sends to all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.

There’s always the possibility Suzuki uses this as an opportunity to introduce a more modern engine, potentially one of the mild-hybrid 1.0-litre units found in the Swift.

2022 Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase price and release date

There’s no official word on the Suzuki Jimny long-wheelbase yet, but it’s possible the extended version of the charming compact 4×4 could be revealed later in 2021. If so, a 2022 on-sale date would be likely.

Prices will be slightly higher than the standard car, so get ready to hand over around £18,000. If you plan to but this new car and use it as a commercial vehicle, you’l be able to take advantage of VAT-free business rates, which will save you sone extra cash.
