The new Volkswagen ID5 electric SUV is on sale now, with prices starting at more than £50,000. Faster ID5 GTX versions are also now available. Read on for full details.

The new Volkswagen ID5 coupe SUV is now on sale. It shares parts with the boxier-looking Volkswagen ID4 SUV and is also available as a high-performance GTX model.
This alternative to the Skoda Enyaq iV and Ford Mustang Mach-E will set you back from £50,550, with prices rising to almost £59,000 for the top spec GTX.
New Volkswagen ID5 price and specs
Prices and specifications for the new Volkswagen ID5 have been announced. There will be five variants available from launch, with prices starting from £50,550.
Tech Pro – £50,550
As standard, the Volkswagen ID5 gets a 77kWh battery with 313-miles of range. It has 174hp and will do 0-60mph in 10.4 seconds.
Every ID5 model gets LED matrix headlights, a panoramic sunroof, semi-autonomous driving aids, electric tailgate, augmented reality head-up display and 12-way electrically adjustable seats with massage functions. All this will cost you £50,550.
Max Pro – £54,050
You’ll have to stump up £54,050 to upgrade to the ID5 ‘Max Pro’. This model has the same batteries and motors as the entry-level ‘Tech Pro’ car, but you do get added equipment including 20-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and a sportier steering setup are all included.
There’s also a heat pump (a more energy-efficient way of warming up the cabin than a normal electric heater).
Tech Pro Performance – £51,940
The ‘Tech Pro Performance’ model gets all the same equipment as the ID5 Tech Pro but features a more powerful electric motor. Power is bumped up from 174hp to 204hp, while the 0-60mph sprint is taken care of in 8.4 seconds.
The Volkswagen ID5’s electric range is unaffected however, so it will still do 313 miles between charges. All this is yours for £51,940.
Max Pro Performance – £55,440
The Volkswagen ID5 Max Pro Performance gets the same 204hp motor has the Tech Pro Performance, with the standard equipment and sporty additions of the Max Pro and has 313-miles of range. Prices for this model start at £55,440.
GTX Max
The GTX Max is the flagship of the Volkswagen ID5 range. It gets dual motors and all-wheel-drive, as well as 299hp which means it can do 0-60mph in just 6.3 seconds. It has 296 miles of electric range, which is slightly less than some less-powerful ID5 models.
Outside, you get a sporty bodykit with deeper bumpers and side skirts, as well as GTX-specific 20-inch alloy wheels. There’s also a smattering of red stitching and GTX badges on the interior.
New Volkswagen ID5 and GTX design
The new Volkswagen ID5 shares a lot of its design cues with the ID4, and that’s no surprise seeing as they are almost identical underneath.
The ID5’s headlights look very similar to the ID4’s, however you will spot some deeper front bumpers on the ID5 GTX to reflect its sportier character.
Around the back, the rear lights have a similar look to those in the ID4, albeit with different LED innards.
Of course, the biggest change compared with the ID4 is the ID5’s roofline. Whereas other electric VWs (such as the smaller ID3) have quite boxy shapes, the ID5 has a swoopy and rakish roofline that makes it easy to tell apart from the ID4 – especially when viewed side-on.
Volkswagen describes the styling as ‘elegant athleticism meets efficiency’. Make of that what you will, but there’s no doubt it looks sportier than the ID4.
The ID5 also gets a subtle lip spoiler around the back to further distinguish it from other VW electric cars.
New Volkswagen ID5 GTX interior
The new Volkswagen ID5 GTX’s interior is much like what you’ve come to expect from existing ID models. It looks very minimalist with plenty of high-gloss trim to spruce things up.
You also get Volkswagen’s ID light on the dashboard – an LED strip that can give the driver navigation instructions and the charging status of the car. All cars also come with a augmented-reality head-up display which can display your speed and navigation directions.
The Volkswagen ID5 has 549 litres of boot space. That’s slightly bigger than the one you’ll find on the ID4. Rear headroom is slightly less than that car as a result of the ID5’s swooping roofline, however.
A 12-inch touchscreen comes as standard on the ID5 featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get a compact 5.3-inch digital drivers display similar to that found in the ID3 and ID4.
