New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS engine and driving

The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is billed as a more hard-core version of the standard Cayman, and this stands out on the track. In fact, it’s already lapped the Nurburgring over 23 seconds faster than the car it’s based on.

It uses the same 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-6 engine as the Porsche 911 GT3, only here it’s detuned slightly to 500hp and 450nm of torque. That’s a lot in a car as light as this – it weighs just 1,415kg.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch automatic. There is no manual option, although Porsche’s PDK automatic is so good you won’t care.

The new Cayman GT4 RS also has tuned suspension with stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, as well as sitting 30mm lower than the standard Cayman to make it shine on the track. The combination of power and lightness means this car will do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds.

New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS design

The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS has a much more aggressive look than the standard car, but this is no surprise given the need for added downforce.

The most notable change is certainly that enormous rear spoiler, which is a staple of all Porsche RS cars.

There are some extra air intakes behind the front windows, where you would find glass in the standard Cayman. You’ll also notice the more aggressive front bumper with much larger vents, as well as the rear bumper with a new diffuser.

Opt for the Weissach package, and you can enjoy some exposed carbon fibre on the bonnet, air ducts, mirrors and rear wing. You can specify for 20-inch forged magnesium wheels as well.

Inside the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS, you’ll find a few examples of weight saving. The carpets are thinner and there’s less sound insulation.

There are also the traditional Porsche fabric loop door pulls, which it claims are there to save weight. You can draw your own conclusions on that…

Beyond the weight savings, there are plenty of carbon fibre and Alcantara trims around the place to make it feel suitable sporty. Plus you know it will all be beautifully built.
