Even entry-level SEL cars come packed with kit. You get 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and stainless steel door trims on the outside and leather seats, aluminium trims and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the inside. Also standard is smartphone mirroring for Apple and Android devices, sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker stereo system. You also get plenty of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist alongside automatic headlights and front and rear parking sensors.

R-Line cars come with a few sporty extras you won’t find on SEL models, including gloss black exterior trims, redesigned bumpers with a more aggressive look and larger 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, you get the same leather seats, aluminium interior trims and 9.2-inch touchscreen display with sat nav and smartphone mirroring as SEL cars, in addition to some metal pedals, an electric opening boot lid, a sportier black roof lining and a wireless charging pad for your phone. You get the same automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and cruise control features as the Touareg SEL, but also standard in R-Line cars is a self-parking feature and a rear-view camera.

Top-spec R-Line Tech cars are based on R-Line models, so come with similarly sporty bumpers, 20-inch alloy wheels and glossy black interior trims, but add some seriously impressive infotainment features. You get a vast 15-inch central touchscreen display with sat nav and smartphone mirroring alongside a second 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. Also standard are upgraded leather seats with 14-way electrical adjustment and heating and cooling features, a wireless charging pad, stainless steel pedal trims and an electric opening bootlid. You also get plenty of safety features, including adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, as well as the R-Line’s neat self-parking system and handy reversing camera.

As the name suggests, the Black Edition gets 21-inch wheels and assorted exterior styling details finished in black. It also gets a glass sunroof and air suspension, normally expensive options. And that’s on top of the R Line Tech model’s massive spec.

While the performance of this model is its biggest draw, it helps that the VW Touareg R is also well-equipped. Available as standard are heated and ventilated sports front seats, a digital instrument display, four-zone climate control, very bright Matrix LED headlights. The Touareg R also comes with an assist that can control the car’s steering for you when parking, so you hopefully shouldn’t scrape the VW’s 22-inch alloy wheels.
