Is the Audi SQ5 a good car?
The Audi SQ5 has had a few nips and tucks to keep it competitive next to the likes of the BMW X3 M40i and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.
To that end, look closely and you’ll spot a new grille that’s specific to the S models and a remodeled rear bumper. Both bumpers get a brushed aluminium-effect strip and there’s a quartet of very shiny (but fake) exhaust tips at the back.
Top-spec SQ5 TDI Vorsprung models, come with larger 21-inch alloy wheels (20-inch come fitted on the standard model) and some extra black bumper and wing-mirror trims.
Bigger changes lie under the new SQ5’s bonnet. The 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine gets stronger steel pistons, an upgraded turbocharger system and some extra cooling, but still produces the same 341hp and 700Nm as before.
As in the old car, there’s a mild-hybrid system that uses a small electric motor gives the engine a boost when you accelerate. The 0-60mph sprint takes the same 5.1 seconds as before.
The Audi SQ5 looks much the same as the old car, but bigger changes lie beneath the skin.
The Audi SQ5’s suspension has been tuned with performance in mind, so it’s firmer and 30mm lower than the standard Q5’s. Range-topping Vorsprung variants come equipped with a sports differential at the back that helps maximise grip when you accelerate out of corners.
Interior updates include the updated MMI 10.1-inch touchscreen, which runs the new MIB 3 infotainment software and can be controlled via voice commands or buttons on the steering wheel.
The electrically adjustable sport seats come with Nappa leather trim and feature embossed S logos and contrasting stitching. You also get some brushed aluminium inlays on the dashboard and doors as standard, while the SQ5 TDI Vorsprung versions are trimmed in carbon fibre instead.
Vorsprung trim also adds a head-up display, Bang & Olufsen sound system, panoramic glass sunroof and electrically adjustable steering wheel.
The new Audi SQ5 will cost from £56,600 for the standard car and rise to £71,750 for the Vorsprung edition.
We’re scheduled to drive the Audi SQ5 very shortly, so check back regularly to find it what it’s like from behind the wheel.
