New Volkswagen Arteon R design

You can have the Arteon R is Fastback or Shooting Brake variants

The latest generation Arteon is a seriously stylish-looking car, and its striking looks have been further enhanced for the new Arteon R, thanks to a sportier grille and new bumpers with a rear diffuser.

The R gets a racier bodykit, as well as new alloy wheels

A set of 19-inch alloy wheels fill the arches nicely, with blue painted brake callipers peeking through the wheel spokes. The quad tailpipes are also unique to the R models.

There’s a diffuser at the rear of the R

The Fastback body style mimics the looks of a coupe with the added practicality of a four-door layout, while the Shooting Brake model is a swoopier take on the boxier body style of conventional estate cars.

New Volkswagen Arteon R interior

The R comes with a digital driver’s display and a large central infotainment system

The Arteon R models are extremely well equipped, building on the R-Line specification levels available on standard variants. A 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and large touchscreen infotainment system are standard, and these do away with physical buttons in favour of haptic feedback and touch-sensitive pads.

Plenty of R badging can be found

These performance versions get a leather interior with sports seat up front and a sprinkling of R logos on the backrests and steering wheel. The standard four-door cars get a sunroof as standard, while the Shooting Brake getting a larger panoramic roof. You can pick from 30 different ambient colour options, while numerous extras including a head-up display and Harman Kardon sound system.

New Volkswagen Arteon R engines and driving

The Arteon R uses the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the Golf R

The Arteon R comes equipped with a 320hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, lifted from the Golf  R. Just as in the hatchbzck, it drives all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.

An all-new rear axle and clever torque vectoring system help maximise grip in tricky conditions and enable both versions of the Arteon R to cover the 0-60mph sprint in less than 4.9 seconds. You can expect them to return around 31mpg in mixed driving conditions.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox

The Arteon R has firmer suspension than the standard car, but it should be far from uncomfortable thanks to the standard fitment adaptive damping system that lets you choose from softer setups for cruising or firmer ones for sporty driving.

New Volkswagen Arteon R price and release date
