The new Volkswagen Golf Estate is shaping up to be a sharply styled, high-tech rival to the likes of the SEAT Leon ST and Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer.
New 2021 VW Golf Estate design
From the front, the new Volkswagen Golf Estate looks pretty much the same as the standard Golf hatchback. You get the same kinked LED headlights, large air intakes and the option of a sportier-looking R-Line model with some extra glossy trim and a ground-hugging front bumper.
The new Volkswagen Golf Estate’s flatter, longer roofline is obvious from the side, but the new Golf Estate comes with a less upright bootlid than the old car, which helps it look a little less boxy and a tad sportier.

Most of the new Volkswagen Golf Estate’s cabin has been carried over unchanged from the standard hatchback. You get an identical button-free dashboard with the same dual infotainment displays and the centre console with – in automatic versions – a dinky gear selector switch is the same, too.
The new VW Golf Estate is 66mm longer than the car it replaces, and most of this extra space has found its way to the back seats. As a result, tall passengers should be a bit more comfortable in the back. Boot space has also grown (albeit slightly) from 605 litres to 611 litres – that’s significantly more than the 381 litres you can fit in the standard Golf hatchback.
New 2021 VW Golf Estate engines and driving
You’ll be able to get the new Volkswagen Golf Estate will come with the same range of engines as the hatchback. These include three-cylinder 1.0-litre and four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engines, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol with mild-hybrid tech and a pair of 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines.
Most of these engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option to upgrade to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The mild-hybrid models come with an automatic gearbox as standard. VW will also introduce a 2.0-litre petrol-powered Golf R Estate model at a later date with around 310hp and four-wheel drive.
New 2021 VW Golf Estate Alltrack
The new VW Golf Estate Alltrack has also been revealed. This version gets with jacked-up suspension, protective body cladding and four-wheel drive as standard. It also comes with a 2-ton towing limit.
New 2021 VW Golf Estate price and release date
The new Volkswagen Golf Estate goes on sale in Germany on 10th September and should appear in UK showrooms before the end of 2020. Expect entry-level models to cost from around £25,000 while Alltrack versions could set you back from around £28,000.
