There’s a new bonnet and quad-exit exhausts for the VZ5

This limited-edition Cupra Formentor VZ5 doesn’t differ hugely in terms of looks compared with the rest of the range, but some tweaks have been made to make it feel a bit more special. Carbon fibre details have been sprinkled about the place and it gets a new bonnet with raised elements for a more aggressive look. There’s a slightly reworked grille, too. At the back, stacked quad exhaust exits have been introduced to give the car a bit more of a growl.

Cupra Formentor VZ5 five-cylinder engine and performance

The Formentor VZ5 uses a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that’s good for 390hp and 480Nm of torque

Powering the Cupra Formentor VZ5 is a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine borrowed from the Audi RS Q3, which produces 390hp and 480Nm of torque. That power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, allowing the VZ5 to accleerate from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds and on to a 155mph top speed.

To help contain that power, the Cupra Formentor VZ5 has the VW Group’s dynamic chassis control system, which can prime the car up for sportier driving or offer a more comfortable ride depending on your mood. It’s suspension sits 10mm lower than the standard Formentor to help with cornering, and you get a new, more powerful braking system to help bring the VZ5 to a stop more quickly.

Subtle tweaks have been made to the standard car’s cabin as well. That car’s sport bucket seats come as standard here too, though unique to the Formentor VZ5 is a dotted graphic interior design. Pictures of this have yet to be showcased.

There’s the usual Formentor’s infotainment tech too, so you can expect a 12-inch infotainment display and a digtal driver’s display to show you key driving information such as speed, fuel and revs. There’s one small but crucial detail about the interior of the Cupra Formentor VZ5 that’ll disappoint UK buyers — it’s only available in left-hand-drive.

New Cupra Formentor VZ5 price and release date

The 310hp Cupra Formentor will currently set you back £43,840. You can expect this new 390hp VZ5 model to cost at least £50,000. It won’t arrive in showrooms until late 2021 or early 2022, so at least you have plenty of time to get saving…

Unlike the standard Formentor models, the new VZ5 will only come with left-hand drive. And considering that Cupra will only build 7,000 five-cylinder models in total, don’t expect many to be offered for sale in the UK.

If you need your fast Cupra Formentor kicks, the cheaper 310hp VZ4 is on sale in the UK now – and in right-hand drive.
