A new Honda Civic Type R is on the way, and the Japanese manufacturer has released images of a heavily camouflaged prototype — giving you a first official look at this front-wheel-drive alternative to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG A35 and Volkswagen Golf R.
Honda has also confirmed that the new Type R will go on sale before the end of 2023. Yes, the Japanese firm has a few new electric cars and hybrids to launch first, so fans of front-wheel-drive hot hatches will have to wait a bit longer…
2023 Honda Civic Type R design
As with the outgoing car, the new Honda Civic Type R is set to keep the ostentatious look — as you can tell through the camouflage on this prototype.
A huge grille sits low on the front bumper, with huge intakes hiding underneath the wrap.
The sides look to have extended skirts, along with a fresh set of black alloy wheels.
A new rear wing sees the supports made of metal rather than the plastic of the outgoing car, though the triple exhaust setup remains.
2023 Honda Civic Type R interior
As with any Honda Civic Type R, the interior will still be based on the regular hatchback but will come with a whole host of changes for a racy edge.
This should include Alcantara trimming everywhere, along with red highlights throughout the car. Bucket seats with Type R badging are near enough certain, plus you’ll probably find the ‘R’ driving mode selector of the old car here too.
2023 Honda Civic Type R engine
Honda has committed to bringing some form of electric power to all cars sold in Europe by the end of 2022, be that hybrids or fully electric cars, but the Civic Type R is likely to be an exception to this rule.
Its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine is set to return and will drive the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.
It’s possible it could use mild-hybrid power, which will see a small generator fitted to allow the car to cut the engine off sooner when coming to a stop, but this should be about as pure as any modern hot hatch can be otherwise.
Power could see a rise from the current 320hp to as much as 350hp, with a 0-60mph time of close to 5 seconds likely.
2023 Honda Civic Type R price and release date
Honda has confirmed the next-generation Civic Type R will go on sale in 2023. It’s possible that the finished car could be revealed in full before the end of 2022.
It won’t be cheap, however – especially if Honda decides to add hybrid tech to this new model. Expect the next Civic Type R to set you back from close to £40,000.
