A new generation of the Audi A4 is in the offing, with prototypes of the ‘Avant’ estate variant spotted testing.
This key alternative to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class could arrive in late 2023, appearing with a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.
New Audi A4 design
The dead giveaway that this is a new Audi A4 comes at the front with the wide, shouty grille design.
It doesn’t look to have grown over the old car — rather it seems to be mounted higher up on the bumper with a new, thicker air-intake element underneath.
You’ll spot narrow headlights (almost certainly featuring LED tech) peeking out of the camouflage, too.
The new Audi A4’s taillights won’t look like the ones in these pictures – they’ve been fitted to these prototypes just for testing purposes.
You’ll also see a small spoiler and a twin-exit exhaust setup on this particular prototype, perhaps suggesting this could be a more potent A4 variant.
New Audi A4 interior and infotainment
Images of the new Audi A4’s interior are yet to surface, but one thing that’s apparent from these spy shots is the removal of the infotainment system mounted on top of the dashboard.
Expect this to be neatly integrated within the dashboard now, as has been the case with recent Audi models. A digital driver’s display is all but certain as well.
The new Audi A4 looks to be about the same size as the old car, so it should come with about the same amount of space as you get in today’s Audi A4 saloon and A4 Avant estate.
New Audi A4 engines
The Audi A4 will launch with a series of petrol and diesel engines, but it could very well be the last generation of the model not to be electric from the off.
Expect a mixture of 2.0-litre petrol TSI and diesel TDI options, with mild-hybrid assistance a standard fit on all. Plug-in hybrid versions will likely come as well, but this particular A4 prototype doesn’t offer any indication of being one.
It’s rumoured that the new high-performance Audi RS4 will return with the same 2.9-litre V6 as the current car, albeit with electric assistance to increase performance beyond the current car’s 450hp.
An electric version of the Audi A4 is expected to follow down the line, dubbed the e-tron, and you can bet there’ll be a high-performance RS4 version, too.
This might ditch the current car’s 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 engine and come with a smaller petrol engine boosted by an electric motor and a compact battery – just like the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63 hybrid.
New Audi A4 price and release date
It’s expected the new Audi A4 will go on sale in 2023, so a reveal of the model will either come late this year or in early 2023.
Pricing will likely rise over the existing model’s £36,000 asking price.
