Audi A5 Cabriolet review

The Audi A5 Cabriolet is actually an MPV. No, really. It manages to be a luxurious convertible, a four-seat GT car and is practical enough that people downsizing won’t feel too hard done by. What’s more, it has sort of the cutting-edge technology and flawless build quality Audi’s become known for.

Its overall proportions haven’t changed much compared to the previous model, but subtle nips and tucks here and there have made sure it still looks contemporary. 

As desirable as the exterior styling is, the interior is even better. All materials used are of great quality, even in places you don’t usually see or touch. Equally, it feels solid enough to outlast the pyramids – it’ll be many thousands of miles before you get a squeak from any trim pieces. That said, it is a little sensible in terms of design compared with a Mercedes C-Class Coupe. 

All engines offered in the A5 are smooth, powerful and refined with the only tangible difference being the severity with which they push you into the seats. If you just want to cruise and don’t need hot-hatch-baiting performance, the entry-level 40 TFSI 150hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol will do.

We love a cabriolet here in the UK, and there are few nicer to be in than an open-top A5.

If you need a bit more pace, then you have a choice of a 40 TFSI 2.0-litre petrol or identically sized 4 TDI diesel, both with 204hp – these are more than powerful enough to feel relaxed on the move. However, if you want to really mess up your hair, then there’s a 45 TFSI 2.0-litre petrol with 265hp.

On the road, the A5 Cabriolet strikes a really pleasant balance between controls that feel responsive, but also light enough that driving never becomes a chore. That said, if you want a properly sporty sensation on a country road, a 4 Series Convertible does an even better job. 

It does keep you nicely sheltered from buffeting winds with its roof down mind you, even at motorway speeds. For the best comfort, though, wed avoid the S line model’s lowered sports suspension – you can remove it free of charge.
