Suzuki Across review

Have you ever walked down the street, looked at someone and thought: “I’m sure I’ve seen you before”? That’s the case with the Suzuki Across, which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Toyota RAV4. Actually, that’s because it really is a Toyota RAV4 in a pretty thin disguise, because the two brands have formed an alliance to help them deal with the changing demands of the world’s motorists.

The Across is a plug-in hybrid that’s designed to offer emissions as low as just 22g/km, combined with a  46-mile electric-only range and the ability to cover the 0-62mph dash in just six seconds.

At the core of the powertrain is a powerful front electric motor that combines with a powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine.

With maximum output of 182hp and 270Nm of torque, the front electric motor draws its energy from an 18.1kWh lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the floor.

The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine has two functions – it provides extra punch when you put your foot down, and it also works as a battery charger when you take things easy.

The E-Four electronic 4×4 system gives the Across genuine 4×4 performance as well as better fuel efficiency. It features an independent 40kW rear motor that works in conjunction with the front motor to provide front : rear torque variation ranging from 100:00 to 20:80. Benefits of this system include enhanced stability during take-off on slippery surfaces such as snow-covered roads, and confident handling when cornering on varying road surfaces.

The fact that the Across can do 46 miles on electric power will slash running costs for private and bvusiness users.

The styling is familiar, with a few Suzuki tweaks, so the ‘striking’ wheelarches remain, plus a sporty large open grille and a front bumper with a lower silver trim.

Key features include LED headlamps with a bi-beam projector (combining low and high beams) and LED daytime running lights. As standard, there are also 19-inch alloy wheels with black gloss coating and distinctive polished face.

Some of the key safety features include driving assist functions such as a pre-collision system, lane-keep assist, and radar cruise control..

The 490-litre luggage compartment provides plenty of space for day-to-day detritus.

The Across is available in six colours – white, silver, black, red, grey and dark blue.
